The Allen Gallery is in a Grade 1 listed building, housing outstanding collections of ceramics, dating from 1250 to the present day – over 3,000 items. Of the collections, the largest is the Berthoud collection of 1,743 pieces of tea and coffee-ware, displayed in one upstairs room.
The touch screen interactive was commissioned for the benefit of any disabled visitors who are unable to access the upper floor; however it also had to offer added value to non-disabled visitors. Because of the size and disparate nature of the collection, key works were presented, giving information about the artisan, the manufacturer and the technique. The whole collection was set in context by weaving these details into the social and economic history of the period.
